Use of Biological Controls in Alaska and Northern Latitudes During Winter Many insects respond to the short day lengths and low temperatures of fall in Alaska by slowing their development and suspending reproductive activities in preparation for overwintering.

Spiders have a widespread, but largely undeserved reputation as being dangerous to the health and welfare of people and their pets. In truth, spiders are extremely beneficial because they prey on many insects that we consider to be pests in our homes and gardens.

Silverfish can be found in homes and buildings throughout the entire State of Alaska. They are very common in Alaska homes, businesses, warehouses, office buildings, medical facilities, and schools. Silverfish can be found in buildings even as far north as Barrow on the North Slope.

The larvae of this midge feed on over 70 aphid species, including the green peach aphid. The adults are small (less than 1/8 inch long), black, delicate flies (similar to a fungus gnat) that live for an average of 10 days, feeding on aphid honeydew.

Dicyphus is a true bug that readily preys on all stages of greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia argentifolii), (see: Distinguishing Among Whitefly Species) preferring eggs and larvae.
